Dr. Arthur Porter confirmed dead

Dr.Arthur Porter, the former head of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) in Montreal, was confirmed dead bytwo  Quebec investigators in Panama.

They were sent to Panama City to verify Porter’s death, after his family announced on July 1st, that he had died in hospital there the night before.

Dr. Arthur Porter, was in prison fighting extradition to Canada to face charges in a $22.5-million bribe and kickback scheme linked to the construction of the new health centre.

Word of his death, despite the news he had been treating himself for lung cancer, was treated with skepticism by Quebec authorities.

Marie-Hélene Giroux, the prosecutor handling the multi-million dollar fraud case, said she wanted proof that Arthur Porter is dead.

Robert Lafrenière, head of the province’s anti-corruption squad, confirmed in a news release that investigators saw his body in a Panamanian morgue.

“The visual identification of the body of Arthur Porter is sufficient enough to formally assure us of his death,” he said.

However, a DNA sample and Porter’s fingerprints were also taken “to remove any doubt,” according to UPAC.

Arthur Porter was born in Sierra Leone, educated at Cambridge, rose in his field of medicine and healthcare administration, to the upper echelons of Canadian society.

He was appointed to the Security Intelligence Review Committee, the oversight body for Canada’s spy agency, CSIS.

He was named to the committee by Prime Minister Stephen Harper in 2008 and later elevated to chairperson before resigning in December 2011.

Dr. Arthur Porter was 59.
