The Pan Am Games will officially open in Toronto tonight, with a spectacle created by Cirque du Soleil and a theme song, “Together We Are One”, sung by Serena Ryder.
The games will continue until August 8th, with 7,000 athletes, representing 41 countries, competing in 51 events this year.
It is a beautiful evening in Toronto for the arrival of the athletes.
The Pan American Games fo back to the 1932 Summer Olympic Games, which were held in Los Angeles. It was at the request of the Latin American representatives of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) who wanted to hold a Central American Games including all the countries of the Americas to strengthen the summer sports in the region.
The first Games were scheduled to be held in 1942 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but were postponed due to World War II.
The first Pan American Games were held in 1951 in Buenos Aires. The first Parapan American Games were held in 1999 in Mexico City, Mexico and have continued to be held every four years with the Pan American Games.
