Dangerous weather in Ontario and Quebec

Dangerous weather is wreaking havoc in eastern Canada as a storm system moves through in wildly fluctuating temperatures. What began as snow, eventually became freezing rain and then rain as the temperature rose. Over the last 24 hours power outages, ponds of water on roads and ice underneath it all have made for challenging conditions.

In Toronto yesterday, 140 flights were cancelled at Pearson International airport. The situation was made worse with a power faillure that shut down operations. Today they’re slowly getting back to normal with 50 flights delayed.

Meanwhile, Hydro-Québec reported 180,000 customers were still without power as of 11 a.m. today with the majority of the outages in Montreal’s surrounding countryside in the Laurentians and the Lanaudière. The public utility has 350 crews working to restore service as quickly as possible.

Now forcasters are warning of temperatures plunging to minus 11 celsius overnight in the Montreal region.

People are being cautioned to stay indoors and hospital emergency rooms are bracing for the increase in fractures and breaks after falls.
