Cold warnings in eastern Canada in the wake of blizzard

Cold temperatures expected overnight and for the next two days, are the sources of alerts and warnings in the wake of a snow-storm system that has now moved into the Maritime provinces.

In Toronto, where they are digging out the 20 centimetres that fell overnight, Medical Officer of Health, Dr. David McKeown, issued the alert this morning. He says it will stay in effect until further notice. The temperature is expected to drop to about minus 15 celsius tonight.

During these alerts extra effort is made to care for homeless people to get them off the street and into shelters. And special attention is advised for the elderly, infants, and those who work outside. This alert also triggered the opening of two 24-hour extreme cold weather drop-in spaces in Toronto.

…a daytime high of 10 degrees celsius a week from now

In Montreal, the city that escaped the snow with only about 10 centimetres of accumulation, the overnight temperatures for the next 3 days are in the minus 20 celsius range.

Incredibly, the long-term forcast has a daytime high of 10 degrees celsius a week from now, so much of this snow will be a memory!
