Cain’s Quest comes to an end

Cain’s Quest 2016, described as “the longest endurance snowmobile race in the world” all 3,500 kilometres of it, was won this year by Team Maine Racing.

Racers Andrew Milley, of Labrador City and Robert Gardner, of Maine, U.S.A.arrived into Labrador City this morning in an emotional victory the two men dedicated to their recently deceased grandfathers.

“This one’s for Gramps! This one’s for Pops!”

“This one’s for Gramps! This one’s for Pops!” shouted Gardner as the team clutched their trophy. Andrew Milley’s grandfather died during the race and his family could not be at the finish line as they were at the funeral.

Just 18 teams were left of the 37 two-men teams that started the gruelling competition. The biannual event started a week ago and the teams travelled the length and breadth of the rugged beauty of the province ending where they began.

Milley and Gardner have raced together in several previous Cain’s Quests, and came close in 2012, but this was the first victory. It wasn’t easy, however, as Milley’s frostbitten nose attests. Along with the trophy, and the coveted bragging rights, the duo now has $50,000 (Cdn) to share.
