Margaret Atwood: a cameo in Alias Grace for TV

Margaret Atwood, the doyenne of Canadian literature, will make an appearance in the CBC/Netflix television production of one of her novels.

Alias Grace, published in 1996, is being produced as a six-hour miniseries that will premier on Canada’s public broadcaster, the CBC, and stream on Netflix beyond Canada.

The Giller-prize winning, Alias Grace, tells the story of Grace Marks. Atwood’s historical fiction is based on the true story of the young Irish immigrant who became a maid in the house of Thomas Kinnear.

She was convicted of his murder in what was then Upper Canada, in 1843. After 30 years in prison she was exonerated. She moved to northern New York state, and no further record of her life exists.

Atwood will film her role on August 16th. “I’m going to be a disapproving lady in a church. Typecasting,” Atwood said with a laugh during an interview with CBC, discussing her upcoming graphic novel Angel Catbird and novel Hag-Seed.

Sarah Polley is the writer-director and actor Sarah Gadon plays Grace.
