Brooke Henderson playing for gold in Rio

Brooke Henderson, the 18-year old golf phenomenon from Smiths Falls, Ontario, shot a 1-under-par 70 today at the Olympic Golf Course in Rio de Janeiro.

“It wasn’t my best day and I’m still a couple of shots back of the lead,” Henderson told reporters after her round. “It was a good learning experience today.”

Henderson sits five shots behind the leader and is tied for 19th following the first round of Olympic women’s golf.

Going into tomorrow, Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn, 20, is leading the pack after shooting 6-under (65) in the Olympic debut of women’s golf.

Two South Korean golfers are tied for second at 5-under (66).

Alena Sharp of Hamilton, Ontario, shot 1-over (72) and is tied for 37th place among the 60 athletes competing. The 35-year-old was the No. 81-ranked competitor in women’s golf heading into the Summer Games.
