Eid al-Adha is being celebrated by Muslims around the world today. This is the occasion, following Hajj, the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, when Muslims gather to celebrate with family and friends and share their good fortune with those in need.
Also known as the Feast of Sacrifice or Festival of Sacrifice, Eid al-Adha commemorates Ibrahim’s (Abraham) willingness to sacrifice his son Isaac, to God
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was in an Ottawa-area mosque this morning extending his congratulations to those who’d completed the Hajj, and wishing all Canadian Muslims a happy holiday.
There is a move among Canadian Muslims to have this, and the feast of Eid al Fitr, which follows the holy month of Ramadan, declared official holidays.
An online petition has over 22,000 signatures. The website explains: “Passing the two Muslim holidays (Eid) as a national holiday, is the ultimate form of education and liberation as Canadians, and takes us one step closer to achieving unity. To grow stronger and for us to understand one another better as Sisters and Brothers in humanity.”
