Icebreakers Needed to Aid Ships in Gulf of Bothnia

The ice situation is bad in the Gulf of Bothnia. Image: YLE / Anssi Leppänen.The ice situation is still challenging in the north of the Gulf of Bothnia. Fifteen ships are stranded along the Central Ostrobothnian coast, many of them in harbours.

For example, five vessels are stuck in Kokkola harbour. On the other side of the Gulf of Bothnia, eight ships are stuck off Sundsvall.

Seppo Puolamäki of the Coast Guard says that the situation did not improve over the weekend, when almost all ships in the area needed help from icebreakers.
