‘Arctic in Transition’ – Nunavik
Université du Québec à Montréal
Montreal, Quebec
Nunavik and the North American Arctic was the afternoon’s first round-table.
Lots of discussion on resource development in Nunavik and its effects on the people there. This is a big deal these days with the unveiling of Quebec’s Plan Nord earlier this year.
Makivik is an organization that represents Inuit in Nunavik. Jean-François Arteau, Makivik’s legal counsel and the executive assistant to Makivik’s presdient Pita Aatami, spoke about the organization’s view on development in Nunavik.
He said Makivik is not against development in the North but said Inuit want development at their own rhythm. He gave the example of education saying that Makivik want’s Inuit youth to be educated for upcoming opportunities in Nunavik. Something that will take time.
