Truck collision kills reindeer in northern Sweden
Eight reindeer were killed near Arvidsjaur, a town of approximately 4600 people, in northern Sweden this weekend when a truck plowed into the animals as they were being herded across a road.
Keeping reindeer is an economic pillar of the indigenous Scandinavian Sami community in northern Sweden. Several more animals had to be put down after the accident. Mikael Jonsson from the Sami community Mausjaur said to local newspaper Pitea-tidningen, “It is deeply tragic when these things happen but mostly I’m glad that no person was hurt.”
