Bear hunting grows more popular in Sweden

Several Swedish counties have received record high quotas for how many animals can be hunted, reports Swedish Television.

Christel Johansson from the Swedish Hunting Association says more Swedes than ever are interested in hunting as a hobby.

“More and more people are getting dogs trained to hunt bear and more want to get out and hunt as soon as the season begins,” she says.

A few years ago, Sweden’s northern Jämtland county was criticised for not demanding that hunters are educated. Many bears were left injured or were not killed in a humane way.

Johansson at the Hunting Association claims that attitudes have changed since then.

“We’ve noticed that the hunters are getting a lot more serious and are educating themselves. Of course, we can’t guarantee that bears won’t be injured this season,” she says.
