Tensions are increasing between the government in Canada’s northwestern Yukon territory and the region’s First Nations governments over questions of resource and mining development.
Plans to change the Oil and Gas Act and alter the Peel Watershed land use plan have both made headlines in recent weeks. Some aboriginal leaders are threatening legal action.
This week, I spoke with Eddie Taylor, chief of the Tr’ondek Hwech’in First Nation in Canada’s Yukon territory, about the challenges the territory’s aboriginal communities sometimes face in benefitting from resource development and why recent announcements from the territorial government have aboriginal leaders concerned.
