Green groups gets wolf hunt called off in Sweden despite threat to reindeer

Reindeer in North Sweden. Photo: Jonathan Nackstrand, AFP.For the first time ever, a Swedish court has called a halt to an ongoing wolf hunt, meaning the controversial “Junsele wolf” will live another day.

Two environmental organisations won their case, when the court ruled that the order to cull the wolf was not properly backed up by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The Junselse wolf has already been moved three times, and always returned north, to reindeer herding areas. But the court says that this is not enough of a reason to allow it to be shot.

Mikael Karlsson from the Society for Nature Conservation says that this is a major step forward for his group’s position.
