Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat carried news of an unusual appointment on Sunday: Jekku the dog has been hired to sniff out leaks in an energy firm’s district heating system.

Vantaan Energia, an energy company in the capital city region, announced a surprising appointment on Sunday. The company wants Jekku the dog to sniff out leaks in its district heating grid.

The two-year-old has been trained to use his sense of smell to detect any leaks in the company’s system. His appointment to work for Vantaan Energia was announced in the appointments section of Helsingin Sanomat, which normally focuses on humans’ world of work.

The company explains in a video that the dog is better able to detect warm-water leaks during the summer, when they are not spotted so soon, and prevent disruptions to service and wasted energy.

Vantaan Energia is owned by the municipalities of Helsinki and Vantaa.
