One dead, two missing in Lapland hostel blaze
Rescue services were alerted to a hostel fire in Äkäslompolo, Lapland, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The first unit arrived on the scene in fifteen minutes but by the time they arrived, the two-storey log building was fully engulfed in flames and had partially collapsed.
The on-duty fire marshal Tuomas Korhonen said that those staying at the Silver Fox hostel had evacuated themselves and about 30 travellers had left the building on their own.
Two guests registered at the hostel are still missing.
The cause of the fire, which completely destroyed the hostel, is unknown. Police are waiting for the scene to cool completely to begin their investigation. At this stage, police cannot say whether there is reason to suspect a crime.
The building, completed in the 1960s, is the former Ylläskartano.
