Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson – Wisdom and Experience
The 26th Governor General of Canada, arrived in the country as a two-year-old with her refugee parents in 1941. The Poy family were fleeing life in Hong Kong.
Adrienne grew up in Ottawa, and earned several university degrees in English. Following post-graduate studies at the Sorbonne in Paris, she married Stephen Clarkson, a political science professor at the University of Toronto.
In the mid-1960’s she began a distinguished career as a journalist and producer with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, CBC.
In 1999 she was appointed Governor General, the Queen’s representative in Canada. Adrienne Clarkson made headlines for many of the changes she brought to the position, but her commitment to Canada’s Armed Forces during deployments in Afghanistan and the Balkans, earned her the respect and admiration of many.
In 2005 she created the Clarkson Cup for Women’s Hockey. After leaving the Rideau Hall, along with her husband, writer John Ralston Saul, the couple created the Institute for Canadian Citizenship.
This fall Adrienne Clarkson is the presenter of the CBC’s prestigious Massey Lecture series. She will be speaking on the subject of “Belonging: The Paradox of Citizenship”.
