Airport body scans will respect privacy

Canada is changing its security screening at airports so that body scans are less detailed. The current scans are revealing and have provoked criticism and privacy concerns.

The new software, called Automatic Target Recognition, will produce a stick image rather than a three-dimensional outline of a passenger’s body. It will project low-level radio frequency energy over and around the body. The wave will reflect back and be picked up by sensitive detectors.

It will be able to identify areas where objects may be concealed under clothing.
