Foreign Minister says Canada will not seek UN Security Council seat

The Canadian media is reporting on statements made by Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird that Canada would not be seeking a seat on the United Nations Security Council next year.

“Canada’s principled foreign policy is not for sale for a Security Council seat,” said Minister Baird in the House of Commons on Wednesday (May 1).

The Official Opposition NDP foreign affairs critic Paul Dewar criticized the decision: “This government is quitting (and) this minister will be noted as the minister who just gave up when it comes to trying to win back our seat at the Security Council.”
