The Canadian government has officially declared the Taliban in Afghanistan and the Haqqani network to be official terrorist groups. That brings to 46 the number of groups on the list set up after the 9/11 attacks on the United States.
Any person or group on the list can have their assets seized and there are criminal penalties for anyone who assists listed entities to help them carry out extremist activities.
Canada has already barred domestic institutions from doing business with the Taliban in 1999 when it signed on to a list developed by the United Nations.
This latest move makes Canada the first NATO country to use domestic law to outlaw the groups.
