Stan Douglas honoured with Scotiabank Photography Award

Stan Douglas won the Scotiabank Photography Award.  The $50,000 prize is given each year to a contemporary Canadian photographer.

Douglas will also have a collection of his work published internationally by German art publisher Steidl, and a solo exhibition at the CONTACT Photography Festival in Toronto in 2014.

Based in Vancouver, Douglas has captured major events in British Columbia, such as the 2008 Vancouver riots and the 1996 landslide at McBride Bay.

“Stan Douglas has helped define and enrich the Canadian art and photography landscape with his outstanding artwork,” said Edward Burtynsky, chair of the jury and co-founder of the award and well known for his own work capturing arresting industrial landscapes.

“He has pushed the limits of contemporary photography and will continue to have an incredible impact on the world of photography both here in Canada and abroad .”

Stan Douglas is the third recipient of the award.  Lynne Cohen and the late Arnaud Maggs were previous winners.
