Heavy snowfall is not at all what you expect on this holiday weekend in Canada. After a seemingly interminable winter, Canadians usually revel in the May long weekend gardening, dusting off the barbecue, having a beer on the deck and, if they are lucky enough to have one, opening up their summer cottages.
Instead Newfoundlanders in the eastern Canadian city of Gander faced 58 centimetres of snow which broke all previous records for snow on that date. The central part of the province was hardest hit, but other parts reported rain, drizzle, fog and cold temperatures.
Sometimes in this country you just think spring will never come.
