Expo baseball great Gary Carter remembered in Montreal

When baseball player Gary Carter died of brain cancer on February 16th, 2012 at the age of 57, fans in Montreal mourned.  The Montreal Canadiens hockey team held a moment of silence during a video montage, before their game on February 20th

Now the man so many knew affectionately as Kid Carter, will be remembered and honored by the street named for him.

Yesterday, the City of Montreal made it official; the street adjacent to Jarry Park where the Expos started out in Montreal, before moving on to the bigger, but not necessarily better, Olympic Stadium, is now rue Gary-Carter.  It’s fitting as Jarry Park is where Carter made the move into the big league.

In a CBC interview, Jacques Doucet, a French radio broadcaster, said fans fell in love with Carter.  “Gary was here for over 10 years and Gary was synonymous with the Expos.” Doucet said, “His smile was contagious and he was one heck of a ball player.”

He was a very caring man who did a lot for the people of Montreal.  His foundation eventually raised over $600,000 US for charity with half of that going to children’s reading programs.

Following the 2004 season, the Montreal Expos were moved to Washington by Major League baseball.  Now the team is known as the Nationals.  And there are still people in Montreal longing for the day baseball will return.
