Montreal’s Botanical Garden hosts the Great Gardening Weekend

The Great Gardening Weekend at Montreal’s Botanical Garden has become another rite of spring for many Quebecers.  It’s raining on and off in the city today, but according to the weather forecast this weekend the skies will clear and people can roam the 75 hectares of gardens and greenhouses getting ideas and inspiration, and advice as they buy some new additions for their own gardens.

Montreal’s Botanical Garden is described as a “living museum of plants from the four corners of the globe.”  The site has are 3 cultural gardens; a Chinese Garden, the largest outside of China, that features bonsai trees, a little mountain and winding pathways.  The Japanese Garden  features a large koi pond and during the summer the traditional Japanese tea ceremony is performed.  The First Nation Garden features totem poles amid the maple, birch and pine trees native to Canada.

For the last 16 years the people at the Botanical Garden, now part of Motnreal’s ‘Space for Life’ have been helping Montrealers enjoy the special pleasure of planting something and watching it grow whether it’s in a container on a balcony, or in a well-cared for vegetable patch.  Urban gardening is becoming more and more popular.

Established in 1931, the Botanical Garden has become a popular respite for Montrealers and tourists alike.  While there is an admission fee, the outdoor gardens are free after 6 pm during the summer..  And the acitivites this weekend will bring a festive atmosphere to the grounds.

Sylvie Perron has been working at the Botanical Garden for 25 years.  She is now the Section Chief of the Outdoor Garden.  Carmel Kilkenny spoke with her to find what’s new this year, and what might prove most popular:
