A bear broke into a pickup truck in the western province of British Columbia on Tuesday and it was all caught on video. Rebecca Moore of Maple Ridge, B.C. says she and her husband were asleep when they heard a noise at about 5:30am.
“By the time we got out of bed, [the bear] was actually inside one of our cars. We saw the car door open and it was just coming out one of our cars,” she said.
“We saw him just open the door of the truck, just easy as anything.… He was obviously used to accessing vehicles.”
“Unbelievable” sight caught on video
Moore was so amazed she says she had to capture the “unbelievable” sight on video, before chasing off the bear. She then posted the video on YouTube.
Conservation officer Denny Chretien thinks the three-year-old bear has broken into vehicles before. He says it’s not a common occurrence but he has had four similar calls including one from the owner of a Porsche.
But this is not necessarily a question of the bear having good taste, but rather of wanting to taste what might be in the car.
Garbage could be attracting bears
Sometimes residents of the more wild parts of the province lock their garbage up in a vehicle to try to keep wildlife away from it until garbage pick-up day, usually once or twice a week in most parts of Canada. Chretien says that’s not such a good idea.
“They (residents) don’t have the (secure) container , so they’ll go put it (the garbage) in the vehicle and shut the door and bears will just go, ‘What is this?’ and it’s just a bigger container,” he said.
The Moores, meanwhile, say they’re just glad they didn’t leave the keys in the ignition.
