Michael Stark and Michael Leshner are celebrating 10 years since they became the first same-sex couple to be legally married in Canada. The two got married in Toronto just hours after a court in the province of Ontario pronounced the Canadian law on traditional marriage unconstitutional.
Two years later the Canadian government legalized same-sex marriage nationwide with the gender-neutral Civil Marriage Act.
Leshner said the court ruling brought him and his husband full equality and “drove the stake through the heart of legalized homophobia.”
