In an exclusive interview broadcast today, with Jian Gomeshi of the CBC Radio program Q, the very private Canadian singer-songwriter and painter reflected on turning 70 this year, and some of the rights of passage she has experienced in an amazing life so far.
Joni Mitchell is one of the featured guests at the Luminato Festival in Toronto next week. During the interview, recorded in her Bel Air, California home last week, she said she will recite her poetry in Toronto as her singing is probably gone. But the voice of a couple of generations still has much to share.
She said she would rather listen to Duke Ellington than her own music as she constantly critiques, questions and tweaks in her mind what she hears from herself. She also describes the very different sounds as she paints. Funny and frank, Joni Mitchell has some very interesting views on the 1960’s and the 70’s and even being honoured at this time in her life.
Joni Mitchell said she is most proud of surrogate mothering people through her music.
