The mayor of Montreal, Michael Applebaum was arrested by anti-corruption officials early Monday morning and will face 14 criminal charges. A broad inquiry is underway into wide-spread corruption involving the awarding of contracts in the province of Quebec.
Breach of trust, conspiracy and municipal corruption will be some of the charges against Applebaum. He is a long-time city councillor who was elected by Montreal’s city council to serve after the former mayor, Geral Tremblay quit amid corruption allegations.
The mayor of Laval, the province’s second largest city, was arrested last month and charged with fraud and gangsterism.
