The MMVA’s are a big street party in the heart of Toronto. And last night some high profile international stars joined Canadians in a night celebrating the best in video.
South Korea’s tourism ambassador, Psy, co-hosted the event and started the night with the tune that just about everyone can sing and dance to now. “Stop taking pictures and bounce” Psy scolded the audience. Then ‘Gangnam Style’ won the Viral Video of the Year award, after more than 1.65 billion YouTube views.
‘Chavril’, Canada’s rock power couple, that’s Chad Kroeger, lead-singer of Nickelback and fiance Avril Lavigne dressed in matching black were there. Lavigne, true to her punk-princess role in a leather spiked tiara or crown, performed her hit ‘Here’s to Never Growing Up’. Avril Lavigne took home the International Video of the Year by a Canadian award, much to delight of the visiting duo known as Jedward. The 21 year-old Irish twins, John and Edward Grimes, who started out on the British reality competition The X Factor claimed to be among the biggest Avril Lavigne fans during a chat on the red carpet before the event.
Avril Lavigne thanked her father, who was in the audience, for all the support over the years but other than the Father’s Day greetings the only word on the upcoming wedding, was that all the guests will enjoy the location. As for the rumours of a baby on the way, time will tell.
Taylor Swift, who was in Toronto for her two sold-out shows at the Roger’s Centre, was a presenter at the awards. She made a great entrance in white and black mini-dress by Canadian designer Vawk. She also took home the ‘Your Fave’ trophy for International Artist. And Ed Sheeran, Swift’s opening act on the tour was another much appreciated guest.
Hip Hop star Drake made a surprise visit and accepted the award for ‘Hip Hop Video of the Year’,and the winners of the ‘Pop Video of the Year’, Marianas Trench performed their tune ‘Desperate Measures’ perhaps appropriately, in their under-ware.
