Canadians Obsessed with Real Estate?

Real estate and the price of houses is the subject of a lot of conversations in Canada.  And now an online survey finds that a majority of Canadians think about real estate on a regular basis.

Zoocasa, an online home selling firm, commissioned Abacus Data to poll 1,000 Canadians across the country, between June 3 and 6, 2013.

In the online survey, 84 per cent of the respondents confirmed they think about real estate on a regular basis, and 85 per cent have gone as far as shopping online for a new home in the past year.

People in Toronto seem most obssessed.  It is the second-most expensive housing market in Canada, after Vancouver, and 47 per cent identified themselves as being obsessed.

“In ever increasing ways, Canadians seem almost obsessed with real estate. And it’s understandable,” Zoocasa president Carolyn Beatty said in a release. “For the vast majority of Canadians, their home is the largest purchase they will make in their lifetime.”

But only 28 per cent of respondents said they went to an open house at some point in the past 12 months, which suggests that online shopping for real estate may be more of a hobby and a wishlist.

It will be interesting to watch the reaction from the rest of Canada to this news, in the days to come.
