The University of Manitoba has been chosen to be the home of the National Research Centre on Residential Schools.
The official signing ceremony marking the decision by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was held at the university Friday, June 21, on National Aboriginal Day.
Canada’s residential school system dates back to the 1870s. The last school closed in 1996.
More than 150,000 First Nations, Métis, and Inuit children were placed in these schools often against their parents’ wishes. Many were forbidden to speak their language and practice their own culture.
According to the university’s website, the University of Manitoba will “will play a key role in the preservation of all statements, documents and other materials collected during the Commission’s five-year mandate.”
