Smartphone users can now input information about how bad the mosquitoes are where they live thanks to a new app developed by students at the University of Manitoba in western Canada.
The students are heavily motivated, being based in the city of Winnipeg which may be the mosquito capital of Canada. The bugs are so big and so bad in summer that some people think the mosquito should be named the provincial bird.
Aboriginal tradition holds that the annual infestation is revenge for the slaying of a mythical figure.

The app, which can be used anywhere in the world, allows users to submit and access reports about the density of mosquitoes in particular areas.
“You see what other people are saying … you know, if you want to bring out some bug spray or if you think you want to bring a lot of bug spray or maybe just a long-sleeved shirt,” said Rory Jacob who helped design the app.
The app can be downloaded for free in the Google Play store and the iTunes App store.
