Plan to provide soldiers a taste of home scrapped

Canada’s Department of National Defence has abandoned its plan to create three mobile outlets to provide troops serving overseas coffee and doughnuts from the popular Tim Hortons brand.

Such a unit was wildly popular at the Kandahar Airfield during the Canadian mission in Afghanistan. It was also highly profitable raking in $7.1 million in gross profit.

Most of that money went into military support and services programs which not funded by the taxpayer. The company, Tim Hortons, had waived the fees and operating costs typically associated with a franchise.

A defence spokeswoman said the new coffee houses were “no longer required.” Tim Hortons was not available for comment.
