Welcome to our show number 54. Today we travel to east coast Canada, where celtic culture is alive and well. Antigonish Nova Scotia, is the site of one of the oldest cotinuous celebrations of Highland Games outside Scotland itself.Listen
This weekend they are celebrating their 150th year. The are also hosting the officially sanction “heavy’ competition… this includes the caber toss, hammer throw etc.
Of course at any highland games event, colouful kilts are always seen in great numbers among contestants and spectators, along with the skirl of pipes somewhere on the grounds.
Antigonish is also the the site of a well-known piping, drumming, and dancing school, and there are stores stocked with highland clothing, accessories and Scottish foods
I speak to Iain Boyd, president of the Antigonish Highland Society and the Games for 2013. I hope you enjoy the conversation and if you didn’t make it this year, a trip to Nova Scotia and the Antigonish Games might be something you’d want to look into for next year Im sure you’ll have the time of your life.
cheers, Marc
