Remote cameras capture rare wildlife shots

Rare pictures of grizzly bears, grey wolverines and caribou are just some of the shots captured by remote cameras in Canada’s northern Ivvavik National Park.

The park covers 10,000 square kilometres and is located in Canada’s Yukon territory. Since it is mostly tundra with few trees, rugged cameras are affixed to stakes. They perform in temperatures that fall below -40 C.

“We can derive a lot of potential information like behaviour, occupancy modeling, habitat use and diurnal pattern, inter-species interaction,”said Jean-François Bisaillon, Parks Canada’s lead ecologist for the wildlife camera project.

The cameras have also captured stunning photos of a bear “mostly destroying a camera” and Bisaillon’s favourite, a howling grey wolf seen above.
