On Tuesday five women ranging in age from 18 to 61 began a 305-kilometre relay swim across the frigid waters of Lake Ontario at the heart of Canada. A trip across the length of this lake by a relay has never been completed.
The women started training in the lake in June to get used to the cold water.

“We started off training in 54 degree [12 C] water,” said swimmer Nicole Mallette. “Take your shower that you normally have, put it on cold and multiply that by 10.”
The swim will raise money for the charity Because I’m a Girl, which aims to end gender inequality and protect girls’ rights.
