The son of Canada’s former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and current leader of the Liberal Party has changed his position and is now in favour of the legalization of marijuana. Justin Trudeau is the first head of a major Canadian political party to take such a stand.
“Listen, marijuana is not a health food supplement,” Trudeau said. “It’s not great for you.” But he added it is no worse than cigarettes or alcohol. So he said it should be legalized, taxed and regulated.
Trudeau’s Liberal Party is competing with the New Democratic Party to capture support from progressive voters.
The ruling conservatives say marijuana should remain illegal in Canada because it hurts users and society.
