Singer Michelle Sweeney is back in Montreal for just two nights at the city’s venerable House of Jazz. Then, it’s back to Kazakhstan.
Michelle Sweeney has spent the past five years touring Eurasia with a 23-piece jazz orchestra gaining a global following with her gospel-trained voice and charisma.
In an interview with the Montreal Gazette newspaper, Sweeney said, being so far away has been good for her: “the biggest thrill of my [Kazakhstan] journey has been the opportunity to renew my spirituality. I needed to be alone again to find out who Michelle was.”
Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio in the United States, Michelle Sweeney eventually moved to Montreal and became a household name, appearing in several films, gracing the stage in performances on her own and in the successful theatre productions of ‘Ain’t Misbehavin’ with Ranee Lee.
The diva, who also sings with a quartet, is planning to star in an upcoming show on legendary American singer Etta James when she eventually returns to Montreal.
