Pianist composes under northern lights

A Montreal pianist went up to Yellowknife, in Canada’s Northwest Territories after deciding two years ago he should play under the glow of the aurora borealis. It turns out it has been a good year to see the dancing lights in northern skies.

Composer Roman Zavada had never seen the northern lights before coming up with the idea two years ago. “”I was looking at the sky and thought, ‘that would be a good idea, the northern lights. I’ve never seen them before.'”

So Zavada went to Yellowknife and had a piano hauled over the rocks on the shores of Prelude Lake just outside of town. He sat down and composed under a glorious sky. Early predictions were for bad weather but since Friday he had clear skies and a terrific show.

The compositions have been recorded and Zavada will take them back to Montreal where he’ll finish putting together an album for release next spring.

“[It was] very magical, very almost spiritual,” Zavada said of the experience. “There’s a special feeling I [can’t] put into words.”
