The big signs along highways leading to Edmonton, in the western province of Alberta normally have smaller accompanying signs reading “City of Champions”
As a reference to its sports teams, it’s not really up to date.
The Canadian Football League (CFL) Edmonton Eskimos team hasn’t won the championship Grey Cup since 2005, and the National Hockey League (NHL) Edmonton Oilers team hasn’t won the championship Stanley Cup since 1990.
If city residents are unhappy about the lack of wins on the sports field, they’re even more unhappy about Edmonton police and their zealous issuing of speeding tickets They also complain about traffic delays because of constant road construction.
Now some wag(s), with no small amount of planning, skill, and daring has taken matters into his, her, or their own hands and decided to update the welcome signs with something they feel more reflects the current conditions of life in the city.
Recently photos began turning up on the internet showing some changes to the city’s entrance signs.
At first officials thought the city’s welcome signs were merely “photo-shopped” but upon inspection it turned out the signs were real and had actually been modified.placing new signs over the originals
Someone had very carefully and accurately recreated the size, colour, and style of the originals and screwed the “updated” signs in place.
Police are not happy are say it’s clearly vandalism.
Residents quizzed on the street were not so sure and suggested that at least it has people talking about the city, and that maybe the slogan of City of Champions, might be re-thought.
