Ms Barlow has just completed the third book in her trilogy about the world’s water resources.

The new “black box” technology could improve OR surgeries around the world © CBC

A Toronto, Ontario surgeon has developed an idea similar to the so-called black boxes used in aircraft.

The idea is that everything done in the operating room by the surgeons and staff, and all data such as patient vital signs, will be filmed and noted.

This is not only to determine what went wrong if there is an incident, but also as a training tool to improve the OR surgeons and team performance. Currently in use at St Micheals in Toronto, a prototype is also to be tested this month in Copenhagen.

I speak to Dr Teodor Grantcharov.

Large Asian carp, which have taken over an American river, leap out of the water as a boat approaches. Getting hit by one these fish is a possibility as is being injured by them. © Russell Gienapp

And the issue of invasive species comes up once again, This time it’s about Asian carp, a fast growing, large fish that out-competes and /or eats domestic species forcing them out of an ecosystem.

They also have the habit of leaping high into the air when frightened, such as whenever a boat passes.  In an infested river, one can easily be hit by one of these large fish which can easily weigh 10 kg or more, and up to 40kg.

Getting hit by one of these when driving your boat is a real possibilty, and if you do get hit, being injured is also a real possiblity.

Lynn speaks to the director of a documentary called Carpe Diem: a Fishy tale.

I hope you enjoy the show, and we welcome any comments you may have.
