It's not often Toronto's subway platforms are this empty, but a closure between two stations for repairs on a busy line will move the crowds back up onto the streets.

Toronto subway section to shut down for 8 weeks

The TTC the Toronto Transit Commission is generally a source of pride to Toronto, but the stereotype of the polite Canadian will be sorely tested by it, in Canada’s largest city in the near future.

Toronto is home to the oldest subway system in Canada.  The original down town line will be 60 years old next year, and in need of some urgent repairs.

The track between two stations, Eglinton and St. Clair, are now so old that the trains have to crawl along the stretch, slowing down the entire city centre line.

Talks will begin on how and when it would be best to close the section for as many as eight weeks to accommodate the necessary reconstruction.

There have been temporary closures of sections of the subway for a day or two, but these have been in more suburban areas, or over the weekend.  To transport over 600,000 people for two months will take some precise planning and a lot of good will.

Carmel Kilkenny speaks with Brad Ross, Executive Director of Corporate Communication for the TTC, to hear more about the work and the plans.
