Canadians were delighted to wake up to the news today that beloved short story writer Alice Munro had won the Nobel Prize for literature. She is the first Canadian-based author to do so and said she was delighted and “just terribly surprised” at the honour.
Striking portraits of women living in small towns in the province of Ontario are a specialty of Munro’s. She herself was born in the farming community of Wingham in that province.
Munro, 82 is only the 13th woman given the award. She was lauded by the Swedish Academy during the Nobel announcement in Stockholm as the “master of the contemporary short story.”
She previously won the Man Booker International Prize for all her work, and numerous other prizes.
