The 'Phoque Bardot' Burger has been on the menu at Côté Est since it opened in June 2012, but it was a recent visit from French tourists that landed the seal burger and the restaurant that makes it in hot water.

“Phoque Bardot” seal burger draws death threats

A burger made of seal meat and pejoratively named after animal activist Brigitte Bardot has incurred a flood of angry and threatening comments for a restaurant in the province of Quebec. The restaurant is located in the scenic Kamouraska region and is owned by hunter Kim Côté.

“Phoque Bardot” is the name  of the burger and is a play on words, phoque being the French word for seal and a word which sounds like a common and insulting epithet in English. Actress Brigitte Bardot is vilified in the region for leading anti-seal hunt campaigns.

Introduction of the burger was meant to be a tongue-in-cheek joke, said Côté. But many people did not think it funny.

A French group called “Defend animals and nature” posted a link to the restaurant on its Facebook page and the insults and threats began to roll in. Côté called police to let them know saying “You never know. They are extremists. To go so far as to send death threats, threats to come damage our restaurant…it’s pretty intense.”

However the “Phoque Bardot” burger is still on the menu.
