Bulky pilots’ manuals to go digital

Air Canada is going to replace the big manuals that pilots have to carry on board company planes with tablets. The electronic manuals will be available early next year. They will save weight and the huge amount of time pilots now take to insert new pages when updates are issued.

The current manuals weigh 16 kilograms each, so two pilots on one plane will save 32 kilos.  Some long-range flights have four pilots. The savings on fuel is just one of many cost-cutting measures that have boosted the airline’s standing with investors.
