Canadian actor William Shatner, who played Captain James Kirk on the “Star Trek” television series, has won the Stratford Festival’s prestigious Legacy Award. The Stratford Festival is Canada’s foremost classical theatre festival and is situated in the province of Ontario. At its beginning, the festival featured Shakespeare plays but increasingly it produces other classical and contemporary pieces.
Shatner performed with the festival company for three seasons beginning in 1954, at one point replacing an ill Christopher Plummer in “Henry V.” Shatner said he was foolhardy to do that, but called it a “magical time.”

Plummer and Smith were Stratford players
Last year, the Legacy Award was presented to Dame Maggie Smith, who played at the festival for four seasons beginning in 1976. The first recipient in 2011 was Plummer who was a member of the company for 12 season, beginning in 1956.
