More than two thirds of Canadians say that door-to-door salespeople are aggressive, even when homeowners clearly state that they are not interested, according to a new survey. The public broadcaster, CBC commissioned the poll which also found that half of respondents found the salespeople intimidating. Especially vulnerable are women and seniors.

Police in Windsor, Ontario issued a warning in July after receiving complaints that some salespeople talked their way into homes under the guise of inspecting water heaters, then pressured people to sign agreements. In April, police issued a similar warning in Nova Scotia about high-pressure sales tactics used to get people to sign up for medical alarm monitoring systems.
Some communities have banned door-to-door sales. Others require salespeople to obtain a license. And in Ontario, all contracts are subject to a 10-day cooling off period when people can change their minds about buying a product or service.
