From late October until late November hundreds of bears congregate, especially in the region around the town of Churchill,in the western province of Manitoba.

Churchill is located about 1,500 kilmetres north of the provincial capital, Winnipeg.

As the bears gather waiting to be able to head out onto the ice to hunt, with seals as their primary diet.

As the bears gather, so to do biologists, climate experts and tourists who come every year to witness and analyze the bears’ annual trek.

The migration can now be seen around the world thanks to technology installed by explore.org, which is the media branch of the Annenberg Foundation, a U.S. non-profit group. They have set up a website with several streaming cameras of the area where bears congregate.

Explore hopes to raise funds for Polar Bear International, a conservation group which seeks works on climate change and other issues affecting these Arctic animals.

About 60% of the world’s polar bears live in Canada.
