November 30th is the anniversary of one of Canada’s most widely known authors. Lucy Maud Montgomery was born in Clifton, Prince Edward Island on this date in 1874.
She was raised on the island in Cavendish. In 1908 she wrote the best seller “Anne of Green Gables”, set on the island, and seven sequels, all huge successes, and which have made the maritime province a favourite tourist destination.

She also wrote 500 short stories and almost as many poems.
In 1911 she married Reverend Ewan Macdonald and moved to Ontario.
The author died in Toronto on April 24, 1942. There had long been rumours about her depression and her eventual death.
In 2009, a granddaughter. Kate Macdonald Butler, revealed a long and closely held family secret about how the author of Anne of Green Gables died.
In an essay in the Globe and Mail newspaper, she said Montgomery committed suicide. She said there was a note, which she’s never seen, but she was told it asked for forgiveness.
Anne of Green Gables has sold at least 50 million copies since it was published and has been translated into 20 languages.
It has been adapted as films, made-for-television movies, and animated and live-action television series. Plays and musicals have also been created, with productions annually in Canada since 1964 of the first musical production, which has toured in countries around the world
