On Monday (December 2) Bertie and Bill Nickerson celebrated another wedding anniversary – their 78th, and the two are quite clearly still in love.
Bill is 99 and Bertie 96, and despite health problems, they still live in the house Bill built in 1950 in the community of Liverpool, in Canada’s Atlantic coast province of Nova Scotia.
Bill says he knew Bertie was the one when he was an 18-year-old back in 1932, and she was a 15-year-old. They waited until she was 18, and married in 1935 (so they’ve been a couple 81 years).

“She came down these stairs. I said it’s heaven. She must have come from heaven,” he recalls.
Bertie says he impressed her as a “cute little fellow.”
And why has their marriage worked all these years?
Bill credits Bertie’s patience and personality. “It’s just that she’s she. I love her,” he says. “I wouldn’t trade a minute with anyone else.”
Bertie says it’s pretty simple: they get along. “I wasn’t going to live here alone,” she tells him. “You’ve got to stay around. You remember that, boy. Don’t you go and leave.”
